Although briefly used as an aerodrome in 1917 during the First World War, it did not operate during the interwar years.
It opened for operational use in March 1942 as a satellite to RAF Wing. No 26 Operational Training Unit were here with Vickers Wellingtons until September of that year it, when it briefly transferred to the USAAF. The Eighth Air Force 44th Bombardment Group stopped here until being moved to Norfolk in the October. It then transferred back to OTU until it was again transferred to Eighth Air Force in August '43.
After the war the army used the site, before finally closing it in 1952.
